In real estate, growth is often measured by one number: headcount.
The more agents an agency has, the bigger and more successful it can appear. But TruHome has chosen a different approach. Rather than chasing numbers for the sake of growth, the company is focused on building deliberately, placing the right agents in the right markets and making sure that growth benefits both clients and the agents already within the business.
For TruHome Founder and Managing Director Daniel Atkins, that distinction is important.
“I am far more interested in building something deliberate than simply being able to say we have a certain number of agents. Growth should create opportunity, not dilute it.”
When More Agents Does Not Mean Better Service
One of the biggest challenges with over-recruitment is the effect it can have on clients.
In some markets, homeowners are contacted repeatedly by different agents from the same agency. One agent may call this week, another the following week, and another a month later, often without knowing that a colleague has already established a relationship with that client.
Instead of strengthening the brand, it can create the impression that agents within the same company are competing against one another for the same instruction.
TruHome believes those relationships should be protected.
The objective is for agents to collaborate, share opportunities and benefit from the wider TruHome network, rather than continually competing internally for the same homeowners and listings.
Giving Agents Room to Build Real Businesses
The same issue exists from an agent perspective.
Every suburb has a finite number of property transactions each year. If a particular market can realistically sustain three strong agents, placing fifteen agents into that same area does not create more property transactions.
It simply creates more people chasing the same business.
That can lead to agents competing for the same listings, sellers, buyers and developments, often against their own colleagues.
TruHome’s approach is to consider the actual opportunity available in a market before continuing to recruit into it.
“I would rather see three exceptional agents in an area building genuine market share and earning well than fifteen people competing with one another simply because we wanted to increase our headcount,” says Atkins.
This does not mean limiting growth. It means allowing growth to follow opportunity.
As market share increases and transaction volumes justify larger teams, those teams can expand. The difference is that expansion is based on a real commercial need rather than recruitment for recruitment’s sake.
Why TruHome Does Not Charge Desk Fees
This thinking also forms part of TruHome’s decision not to build its business around monthly desk fees.
Many real estate models generate recurring revenue from every agent who joins the company. The more agents on the books, the greater the monthly desk fee income.
For TruHome, that can create the wrong incentive.
If an agency profits simply by adding another agent, there is a commercial reason to keep recruiting regardless of whether there is sufficient opportunity for that person to succeed.
TruHome has deliberately avoided that model.
“We never want to be driven by headcount because another agent means another desk fee. Our interests should be aligned with our agents. We should benefit when they succeed, not simply because they joined the company.”
That alignment is central to the way TruHome wants to grow.
The decision to bring someone into the business should be based on whether there is a genuine opportunity for them, whether they are the right fit for the market, and whether their appointment strengthens the existing team.
Quality Over Numbers
Rapid recruitment can create impressive numbers, but maintaining consistent standards becomes increasingly difficult when growth is not controlled.
Every agent carrying the TruHome name represents the wider business. Their communication, market knowledge, marketing, negotiation ability and professionalism ultimately influence how clients perceive the entire company.
Deliberate recruitment allows TruHome to remain more selective about who joins the business while giving existing agents the support and opportunity needed to build sustainable careers.
It also creates greater accountability within local markets.
Rather than having numerous agents loosely servicing the same suburb, the aim is to develop recognised area specialists who understand their markets, know the competing stock, build relationships with local homeowners and take genuine ownership of their territories.
Growth With Purpose
TruHome continues to have significant ambitions for growth across South Africa.
The goal is not to remain small. It is to make sure that expansion never comes at the expense of the people already inside the company or the clients they represent.
New markets will continue to open. Teams will grow. More agents will join.
But the principle remains simple: growth should have a reason.
“We want to build a significant national business, but I want every person inside TruHome to feel that there is a real opportunity for them here. I never want an agent to feel like they were recruited simply to make our numbers look bigger.”
For agents, that means joining a company where market opportunity, internal competition and long-term earning potential are considered before recruitment decisions are made.
For clients, it means dealing with a more coordinated network where agents are encouraged to work together rather than constantly competing against colleagues from the same brand.
And for TruHome, it means continuing to build the company around productivity, collaboration and quality rather than headcount alone.
For agents looking to be part of something deliberate and special, where their interests and long-term success are genuinely considered, TruHome is continuing to expand selectively across South Africa.
